1. Why a new church?
New
churches, like new babies, tend to grow faster (and sometimes healthier) than
established ones. Stats prove that healthy new churches do a better job of
reaching unchurched people than established ones. Besides, considering the fact
that there are ten (10) new developments starting up in the Jamestown area right
now, with a proposed total of 1,371 housing units, that translates into a lot of
new people who would never fit into the present churches.
2.
Why this new church?
This
is a question about "vision" - or our unique "thumbprint." For an extensive
discussion on this, see our
Vision page. In a nutshell, we believe
God is calling us to be a church where people from all walks of life, ethnic
backgrounds, religious backgrounds, and socioeconomic status can come together
and really serve others because of our desire to impact the world for Christ. We
have sensed that God wants to raise up a church that reaches out, very
intentionally, to those around us who do not yet have a relationship with Him.
We believe that all of us are searching for a genuine encounter with the God
that created us and, given proper leadership, want to know and follow Him.
This church is going that
direction!
3.
What about kids?
We love 'em.
Our Children’s Worship is designed for preschoolers and younger children. Are
you interested?
4.
What about teenagers?
Typically,
youth ministry is one of the last ministries to develop in new churches - and we
have just launched ours! SInce young people tend to congregate in packs, it
takes a pack to keep them. We're seeing young people coming and are praying
that families with teenagers will have a heart to establish a church where their
friends can be reached.
5.
Why do you not advertise
a denominational association?
We have
people from all kinds of denominational backgrounds in our church - Catholic,
CRC, First Assembly, Baptist - and many from no denominational backgrounds.
While we are proud of our CRC roots and ties, many unchurched people (especially
those not from the Bible belt) have negative preconceptions about the CRC, or
other denominational churches.
6.
Why, then, be a part of
any denomination?
We tell
believers that there is no such thing as a "lone ranger Christian." We believe
that churches should model this by cooperating for the purposes of neighborhood
and world evangelization, and by allowing ourselves to be held accountable in
certain areas by a larger-than-ourselves fellowship.
7.
Why not be an
"independent" church?
In a very
real sense, we are. We are an autonomous, self-governed, body of believers. We
budget, buy, and build as we feel the Holy Spirit leads. Denominational
affiliation should not be viewed as having a "headquarters" from whom we get our
marching orders. We believe those (marching orders) come from Christ, the Head
of the Church!
8.
How can I get to know
people?
We tell
people that "church" takes place in three places – during Sunday morning worship
celebrations, during a Small Groups meeting some other evening of the week
(right now on Sunday nights for most groups), and during Thursday evening
service projects in the community. If you really want to get to know people,
check out our Small Groups and/or Service schedule.
9.
Are you "Charismatic?"
We believe
this is a misunderstood question. Every Christian is charismatic - filled with
the Holy Spirit - upon
conversion,
although not every Christian is daily yielded to His power and control.
However, we are neither "Charis-maniacs" nor "Charis-phobiacs." That is, we
believe that real, authentic, Spirit-filled worship is attractive to unchurched
people as well as necessary for believers. We believe that genuine expressions
of worship such as lifting of hands, clapping, closing your eyes, singing, etc.,
are proper and necessary. However, we also believe that disorderly worship is
confusing (1 Cor. 14) to unbelievers. Our goal is to create a Sunday morning
environment where YOU can bring YOUR FRIENDS who do not know Christ and sense
authentic worship and love for God and for themselves, without being turned off
by "contrived" worship. As much as we believe in authentic worship, we will
have all eternity to worship God in heaven with all the passion and fervor we
want. We only have a short while to influence our friends and loved ones to
come to know Christ - so that they can join in the praise and worship!
